Aiming to be a cancer center in which you can place your trust
Director , Yasushi Toh
The Kyushu Cancer Center was established in 1972 as the only cancer center in Kyushu. The basic principle of the Kyushu Cancer Center is <to respect “the feelings of patients” and “the feelings of their families,” with the aim of providing the best cancer treatment with kindness and thoughtfulness>. This basic principle was created based on the words “the feelings of patients” and “the feelings of their families” from the first director, Dr. Irie, and the second director, Dr. Moriwaki, respectively (the picture shows the stone monument with their own handwriting). Since over 40 years ago, they have been strongly aware of this mindset, which is now said to be important for cancer treatment and is passed down to this day at the Kyushu Cancer Center.
The Kyushu Cancer Center espouses a vision of being “Japan's leading clinic for cancer that is friendly to patients, families, and staff members,” even aspiring to be the “world’s top level hospital for cancer.” In order to be a cancer center in which you can place your trust, our entire staff strives to be <partners walking together> for cancer patients and their families, <partners enhancing the quality of cancer treatment in Fukuoka, in Kyushu, and in Japan> for local health care providers, and <partners who are motivated, maximize their specialties, and improve one another as professional cancer treatment providers> among staff members. In addition, we are actively promoting a “team approach to health care, supporting individual patients through the participation of those in all occupations” in daily cancer treatment.
In the 3rd Basic Plan to Promote Cancer Control (2018) based on the Cancer Control Act by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, “promoting cancer genomic medicine,” “promoting a team approach to health care,” “rare and intractable cancer control,” “cancer control based on life stage including employment issues,” etc. in order to realize personalized treatment based on the genetic abnormalities of cancer are being reinforced, in addition to the current plan. The Kyushu Cancer Center is a nationally designated cancer center in Fukuoka Prefecture and is also recognized as a medical center playing a role as a leader in Japan in terms of promoting cancer treatment based on the Cancer Control Act and the Basic Plan to Promote Cancer Control. Moreover, it is one of the Japan’s top medical center with satisfactory results regarding clinical studies and clinical trials, which are essential for the advancement of cancer treatment.
As a super aging society has arrived, cancer patients will continue to increase for the time being, requiring the promotion of home-based cancer treatment.
With the hopes and expectations of cancer patients and their families, the Kyushu Cancer Center will enhance not only the medical treatment/education/study systems but also the support systems for cancer patients and their families, seeking to improve their quality of life and satisfaction. As one activity in order to achieve this goal, we have set up an 'entering and leaving hospital support center' to plan medical treatments taking into consideration the lives of patients during hospitalization as well as their lives after leaving the hospital, along with 'cancer nursing outpatient department' where people can receive consultation for any concerns they might have regarding cancer, in order to provide smooth cancer treatments between inpatients/outpatients/regional/home-based. Two years ago, we newly established a 'home nursing care station', which is the first facility among cancer centers in Japan to promote home-based treatment. Moreover, the 'support center for patients and their families' located at the entrance of the hospital is used by many patients and their families. The support center includes a “cancer consultation center” that can provide a wide range of consultative support, a “palliative care center,” a library for patients, a salon for patients, an appearance care room, etc. Furthermore, we opened the country’s first 'Geriatric Oncology Department' in September 2018, with the aim of providing the best cancer treatment for elderly cancer patients. In addition, we started the 'Dermatologic Oncology Department' in April 2019, in order to be able to support those with skin cancer, which is anticipated to continue increasing.
We strive to clear challenges one by one with your help in order to be a cancer center in which you can place more and more of your trust. To further reinforce the Kyushu Cancer Center, in addition to developing cancer treatment not only regionally but throughout Japan, in particular as a designated cancer center, we will do our best to fully respond to “the feelings of patients” and “the feelings of their families,” which is the basic principle of our hospital. We look forward to your guidance and support.
