Department of Gastroenterological Surgery

Summary of Department

Our mission is to provide the highest level of surgical care as a center for cancer treatment in the Kyushu region of Japan.

We have been pioneering endoscopic surgery (thoracoscopic surgery and laparoscopic surgery) in the Kyushu region. At present, most of surgeries are performed under endoscopy, and stable results have been obtained with improvements in our surgical skills. The operation time is not inferior to that of conventional open surgery, and the postoperative recovery is certainly faster.

We will do our best to determine the possibility of surgical removal, even in cases of advanced cancers that other hospitals have deemed inoperable. For advanced cancer that invades other organs, we attempt curative resection by combining chemotherapy and radiation therapy. When extended surgery is needed in the head and neck area, respiratory area, or pelvic area, we perform combined resection and reconstruction in cooperation with each department.

We also believe that function-preserving surgery is important. We are making efforts to safely implement the latest treatments, such as laryngeal preservation, for cervical esophageal cancer, stomach preservation and reflux prevention surgery for gastric cancer and anal-sparing surgery for lower rectal cancer.

Main target disease

Esophageal cancer: esophageal benign tumor

Stomach cancer: gastric submucosal tumor, gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)

Colon cancer: rectal cancer

Surgical technique

Subtotal esophagectomy (thoracoscopic, open thoracotomy)

Larynx-preserving cervical esophagectomy

Laparoscopic total gastrectomy

Laparoscopic distal gastrectomy

Laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy (with double-flap reconstruction)

Laparoscopic colectomy

Laparoscopic low anterior resection (with transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME))

Laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection (Miles’ operation)

Laparoscopic intersphincteric resection (ISR)
